Guide Right

New York Alumni uses its Guide Right committee to work with and mentor students as well as provide various programs throughout the year for children in the community. Some of our programs include: annual Halloween and Christmas parties, Jr. Kappa League Kane Team, participation in the Pan-Hellenic Careers Conference, and field tripe to Columbia University sports teams' games (football and basketball).

Guide Right History

Kappa Alpha Psi's Guide Right national service program began under the guidance of Brother Leon W. Steward, a YMCA secretary, of the St. Louis Alumni Chapter. Brothers Steward and J. Jerome Peters studied the problem of continual need of financial assistance and guidance of active undergraduate chapters. Brother Stewards proposed solution was a program, designated Guide Right, of guidance that assisted high school seniors in the choice and pursuit of useful careers consistent with the Fraternity purpose. This program was immediately adopted at the local level to the extent of providing scholarship to needy and talented participants. The 12th Grand Chapter adopted Guide Right as the national service program of the Fraternity.

The basic objectives of Guide Right, can be summarized a follows:

	To help youth, especially those of high school age, in their selection of courses leading to vocations compatible with their aptitudes, interests, and personalities.
	To assist students, while they are in training, to get started in employment, and to progress successfully in their chosen fields.
	To assist parents in the handling of their children by giving them the opportunities to talk over their problems with those who know and are successful in their chosen vocations.
	To afford the less fortunate youths a respite from the drudgery of the streets, through sponsored entertainment and cultural
	To inform youth of the values of higher education, of assistance available for continued educational pursuits, scholarships, loans, professional counseling, fellowships, etc.; of various occupational and professional opportunities; and of current labor demands and the trends on the labor market, supply rewards, etc, (2) requirements for obtaining employment, i.e. personal, scholastic, and economic.

Since its inception, The Guide Right program has swelled from vocational programs to other programs like the Kappa Instructional Leadership League. Now called Kappa League, this program sought to help young men grow and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor-participants would achieve worthy goals for themselves and make constructive contributions to their community when leadership roles become their responsibility. This included studies in self-identity discipline, assurance, awareness, and appearance; training (academic, career choice, preparation, and organization); competition (politics, career advancement, and sports); social (religion, the arts, entertainment, conversation, communication, etiquette, and manners); and health education (physical fitness, sex education, drugs, and health and safety).

New York Alumni's commitment to Guide Right has been exhibited over the years through its work with various projects including our Scholarship Foundation and a local Student of the Year Pageant. Currently, NY Alumni sponsors two Kappa League programs in Harlem:

Frederick Douglas Academy High School
Harriet Tubman Elementary School (a Junior Kappa League program)
Through Guide Right, NY Alumni has continued "Training for Leadership...".
Reginald F. Lewis Memorial Luncheon/Kappa Alpha Psi New York Alumni Scholarship Foundation

The New York Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc and its Scholarship Foundation have donated funds to talented young men for over twelve consecutive years. With this year's luncheon, the Foundation will have given nearly two hundred thousand dollars ($200,000.00) to products of the New York City School system.

The luncheon is the culmination of a decade-long effort to support educational opportunity for youth. The Foundation's beginning came in 1988, due to the inspiration of Jonathan P. Hicks, a reporter for the New York Times and a member of the New York Alumni Chapter. In that year, Kappa Alpha Psi New York Alumni Scholarship Foundation Inc. was incorporated by the State of New York as a non-profit scholarship foundation. Most of the funding for the scholarships has been provided by members of the Fraternity in the New York area who made personal contributions aimed at making a college education available to talented young men. In addition to fund raising, the foundation is involved in mentoring and tutorial activities and hosting tours of college campuses to introduce New York City youth campus environment.

Patrons of the luncheon also play a vital role in helping to fund these scholarships and it serves as a testament to these students that people in their community are behind them. The scholarship luncheon also has significance because it honors one of the Foundation's earliest and most generous supporters, Brother Reginald F. Lewis, the late chairman and Chief Executive of TLC Beatrice International Inc. He was a cherished member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and an internationally renowned businessman. Most important, however, was his spirit of giving, which enabled so many organizations to help people in every aspect of society.
